MK1 golf KR

Hi there , just a few questions basically :

I have got a D reg mk1 golf cabby and also a G reg 1.8 KR engined corrado.
I know there is a few threads about this conversion but cant find everything in one that i need ,

: Do i have to remove my os/f engine mount and flip it up side down and weld it back in the same place or further back at an angle .

:steering rack , can i use my standard rack or use the one out of the corrado .

:Gear linkages ? do they need to be changed and re drilled inside for the selector to bolt down .

:Do i need to change my fuel pump and if so will this just go straight on

:can i use the shafts out of the corrado or do they have to be 100mm shafts off a late cabby ?

:is there anything else i need to change other than the one i do know about the manifold ?

Any help would be great then i can start a thread :D

You've not said what engine your cabby currently has…..so can't answer all the questions.

The first three things you mentioned are only needed for small block cars - your cabby is 99.99% going to be a big block (either carburettor - Clipper; or GTI). They did do a 1.3 cabby on the continent but never in the UK, and they're rare over there anyway. So if you had one, you'd have probably mentioned it.

Why not keep your existing cabby gearbox and save all the hassle of messing around trying to obtain 100mm driveshafts.

Ahh right it did have a 1.8 8v not to sure on engine code or anything like that as i got it without the engine , but definatly had a 1.8 8v and also pretty sure it had carb . thank you

You'll need to flap around with a proper GTI fuel pump of some kind then. The tank itself will be ok, since its the newer kind.

Small bumpers could be misinterpreted because there's 3 sizes of bumper on Mk1 Golfs across the years!!! Small metal ones (1974-79), medium size plastic ones (1980-1985 or so) and big 'clipper kit'. Depending on bodystyle, the middle ones might be described as small or big.

Right thats good to know then probs going to be hard to find  . And my bumpers are the medium plastic ones .
i suppose it would of been easier to do if i started with a GTI but o well i have started now ;)

I could use a mk2 golf gti fuel pump ? is that right .

I dont think there's space to fit one underneath the car. Just find and fit the GTI stuff from a cabby of a similar age.

If ur corrado engine comes with kr 16v box then ull have to get 16v 100m conversion driveshaft, also ull need to get a conversion manifold to fit round the shape of the car, also I'd u go stainless steel manifold ull have to take into account how close it gets to the steering rack gaitor and there was a bloke I spoke to who's caught fire from his manifold so that needs to looked into, also ull need to cut up the air box the metering head sits on to make it sit properly other wise u won't be able to close the bonnet, Im not sure about gear linkage but I dnt remember havin to change mine, Also wen
Fitting the fuel filter ull wanna move that back from where it normally sits due to the fact if u have a crash the fuel filter is as near to front as can be so that shud be moved as far back as possible, also the wiring….. If ur not clued up on the looms side of things then there's a problem cuz it might seem easy to do for ppl who know how but from what I know it's pretty complicated

Hope that helps

Dan

P.s have a look at my thread hopefully summat on there might help u also

Also mate if u get the 100mm driveshafts then ull need to
Get the hubs to fit them, I think hey came
Off a late cabby(might be wrong) but they ent cheap otherwise u can do wat I did is just grind the lip off the end
Of the flange for it to fit into the 90mm hubs

To save faffing around with swapping tanks/pumps why not use carbs? Or failing that I have a cab gti tank in my garage :) (shameless lol)

And it was mine that caught fire, i made a thread and wil be updating it soon with precautions I'm faking against the steering rack rubber. When conversions on the go you'll pick lots of info up, use your gearbox and driveshafts to save unnecessary spending on 100mm shafts and hubs though.

Right i have managed to get hold of a gti fuel pump , so basically i could still use my 90mm shafts untill i find some 100mm ones going cheap or off a late cabby .
untill i start getting the engine out of the corrado i obvi dont know what will fit and what wont so thats why all the questions .
Also the corrado has PAS so could i remove the pump and fit a 1.8 16v belt to fit the non PAS engine ?
.
I have someone looking at doing the loom for me as i havnt a clue but shall i keep the interior loom and fuse box and get the engine loom spliced and modded into the interior loom ? if that makes sence :/ , Thanks for your help so far.

Yeah use your box, flywheel, clutch and driveshafts. You won't find 100mm shafts and hubs cheap anytime soon I'm afraid.

Yeah the 100mm drive shafts I bought were I think about£ 100, I think if u use a different box ( I think it's a 9a) then u can use ur 90mm drive shafts but then u gotta find the box obv, yeah keep the dash loom obv unless ur gonna change the dash

ahh right the only problem is i dont have any part of the 1.8 8v engine or box , a little confused but i definitely cant use 90mm shafts on the kr box ?
If i do get hold of some shafts i will just grind the lip off as i done that to one of my friends .
another question is i have a decent set of drilled and grooved front discs and pads , would i be able to use them along witht he calipers on the mk1 , but then i am running 13'' banded steels and i personally dont think the wheels are going to go over them , but thats something i suppose i will have to try unless someone on here has dont it :) , thank you

Your car already has a gearbox, doesn't it?

no only have the kr box , long story short it was my mates old car and he has now used the engine out of mine including box for his caddy , i have some 90mm shafts lying around though , o and the old box was an auto anyway so wouldnt of been using that :D

So you'll need the gear linkage for a manual 5 speed too? I think you might need the steering rack also (can't remember if auto steering rack had the bracket for the linkage).

Gearbox can be 'converted' to 90mm shafts by swapping the drive flanges on it; or seek 100mm shafts from a later cabby and make the small mod or use later hub carriers too.

Don't forget KR gearbox has a 24mm input shaft, most other 020 gearboxes including all in Mk1 have 22mm input shaft - but if you're using a KR too, your friction disc will accept the 24mm shaft already. If you're mixing and matching, you need to make sure it does match etc.
