mk1 golf gti dx engine into a mk1 caddy diesel

Whats involved with doing this conversion?

I have everything as i have both cars next to each other. I have carried out a 1.8t conversion into my mk1 golf but what are the differences with putting the DX engine into a mk1 diesel caddy?

All the mounts are the same, im going to swap the entire dash and engine loom over, but the only thing im thinking about is the fuel side of things converting from diesel to petrol.

Will i have to swap the diesel system out for the k jet system?

you will need to use kjet with the dx unless you want to convert to carbs.

the fuel tanks are the same for petrol and diesel but they dont have a lift pump like the gti.

i have a caddy sport and that has a flat plate in front of the drivers side rear wheel that the fuel pump and accumulator mount to. there is no lift pump in this either so you should be ok

the pump is the same as gti and you should be able to swap your fuel lines and use the mk1 golf pump loom you will need to weld the metering head mount in and move your washer bottle to behind the drivers side headlight

you will need to swap the exhaust downpipe at least and mid section will fit but they are different when you get to the back end.

also id swap the brakes and fit the front anti roll bar

check inside the fuel tanks first off, you are looking for the swirl pot. gti need this swirl pot to be there and in good condition, the diesel may not have one or if it does it may not be the same as a proper gti unit. look at the filter that sits in it too if it has one, and just the overall condition of it.

tbh easier to swap the tank then mess about cleaning it, petrol cars really hate diesel ;)

you'll probably want the rear beam off anyway to swap the rear roll bar over, so may as well have that off fr full refurb, tank off, all lines etc then just fit to the diesel. then sell all diesel stuff as complete conversion kit for someone else

Im doing the conversion for a friend, and both cars are his, but the mk1 cabby was taken in on the scrappage scheme so im swapping the engines over and in return have the complete cabby for all parts for my mk1 cabby as this is a low mileage one with no rust or rot anywhere on it and my fuel tank has seen better days and gonna have everything else off it to refurb/sell etc.

So i might be able to get away with using the diesel side of things like tank, lines etc if i clean them?

yep just as long as tank is spotless, and it has a proper swirl pot inside it

im pretty sure caddy tanks dont have a swirl pot if you take the tank off you might be able to take the level sender out and have a look inside.

they rust badly on the top so it may be hard to remove and its hard to find a good replacement as nobody makes anything.

when i took mine off and started cleaning it i found a few rust holes so just used petro patch and lots of paint.

well if it doesnt have one you'll need to add one otherwise you'll kill your main pump. a possible solution could be the liver pump and under car reservoir from late cab/rocco or g40 shape polo, assuming they fit the caddy tank
