I am doing the same conversion on my Cabriolet.
The Mk1 Golf Owners Club
I never had the complete doner car, just the syncro running gear. It can be made to fit, although it might be a more precise and easier conversion if you could some or all of the floor pan. I have managed to attach the the rear using the existing rear beam mounting points, although it does need slight modification, and the diff needs slightly spacing up to meet the propshaft. Be prepared for a bit of fabrication.
Hope this helps and let me know if there are any other questions you have.
Good luck with the project.

thanks for the info iv had a look at the pics looks like it almost finnished, iv only just got started on mine and first info i need is what i may need off of mk2 syncro before it goes to scrapers, iv got all runnig gear off and wire loom for reverse gear switch (dont know if its needed but thought may as well get it off). i may cut out the bracket for the prop shaft, how did you mount yours? may also cut out metal for front mount point for sub frame but do i need to? (3hole bracket bit) where did you get the rear brake calliper mounts from?

If you have the doner vehicle, I would try and use the floor section for the rear beam. I never had that choice, so I had to try and use the original mounting points.
I mounted the gearbox which uses the standard Mark1 Cabriolet mounts and then fitted the propshaft to see where the mounts need to go. I then fabricated the mounts myself.
As for the rear caliper carriers, I put a message on the VWSyncro website in the parts wanted.

I think the guy I got mine from was Dutchdubs from the Netherlands. I paid 60 euros including delivery.

hi i had the same idea for a 4x4 converstion on my mk1 and having done one on my mk3 golf im telling you its not that easy!! so be prepared

also those pics of that converstion make it look easy but alot of work was done to that car the rear axel was cut and shorted to keep the wheelbase the same and the hole tunnel was replaced with the one from a mk2 syncro i know cos i asked (if i can find the email i will put it up). i also was looking on my mk1 on the ramp this weekend and with out a choice the tunnel would have to be made bigger to accomedate the prop and exhaust. also a front subframe would help keep the strenght of the car which involves alot of mods and still would depend on what you will do with the wishbones.
good luck let us know how it goes :)

RE; 4x4

Hey guys

I have also just started a 4x4 conversion on my golf 1, but here in SA we didn't syncros, but I got my hands on an S3 audi complete with Haldex controller. I was wondering how hard or easy will it be to get everything to fit and run properly.
I need some advise or pointers of what to do and not to do.

Thanks in advance
