Mk1 g60 exhaust

Post

Hi, getting on with my mk1 g60 conversion. Got a problem with the exhaust manifold just wanted to know what everyones thoughts were.

Engine runs and idles but when you give it some the exhaust manifold gets red hot, literally! at the point where it goes 4 into 1 and into the exhaust.

I read threads to say that the standard mk1 golf exhaust could be used but am wondering if this is the problem or perhaps its the manifold?

I've got a stainless manifold, goes 4 into 1, would 4-2-1 be better? Or would going from the standard mk1 exhaust (1 3/4inch? off the top of my head) to the corrado size 2 1/4inch (is this right?)

Any suggestions welcome

Stainless will get hot quick any way especially with power.

I can't really help with the size of it, but wouldn't have thought mk1 (smaller) would've been better suited to it.

Is the timing correct? Advanced ignition timing causes hot manifolds iirc.

Hi, yeah I checked the timing and yes it was too advanced so I pulled it back a notch and the exhaust doesn't glow now. Thanks for the help
