mk1 g60 drive shaft problem

Got a bit of a problem and so close (hopefully) to finishing my project. I have a Mk1 Golf g60 with a passat 02A gearbox. I bought the project part finished and just tying up a couple of loose ends.
Basically the car has a really nasty knock sound and the garage has narrowed it down to the long drive shaft being too long and it pushing up into the gearbox. It has standard mk1 gti driveshafts on. It is the longer driveshaft on the passenger side.
It does drive and has driven, getting worse when I changed from the 16 inch wheels to the 15 inch.
Should it take a different sized drive shaft? Any ideas or help would greatfully be recieved.
Many thanks
Damon

mk1 GTI shafts with 100mm inners CVs fitted to them?

Did they grind down the inside of the CV to fit all the way onto the spline?  If they didnt and just put them on as far as they could it could be causing that.

I'm running mk1 gti shafts, with 100mm inners, but had to turn down the internal spline on the CVs to get the inners all the way on to the shafts, to be totally honest the shaft are still too long, it runs fine, no obvious knocking, but does still eat CVs.

if thats the problem, as you said, find some late cabbie / rocco shafts which come with 100mm inner cvs as std, theyre shorter shafts.  if you can find some.

just an idea.

Cheers mate,
Do you know how late on cab models the ones came that were shorter? I'm willing to try anything.
Many thanks Damon

this implies 87+.  But it's not ALL late cabbies, I don't know which ones exactly.  I have an 89 clipper as well as the tintip, and it doesnt have 100mm inners.
