Just renew the existing disks and pads (@?20?), bleed with fresh fluid and make sure the rear shoes are OK and adjusted properly.  The only advantage of the vented GTI disks would be if you live at the top of an alpine pass or use Silverstone every weekend.

Hang on, mk2 Golf Front Calipers and Carriers defintly don't fit Mk1 GTIs, would have though Driver hubs are the same?

The Spacing between Carrier to Hub mounting bolts is different on mk2s to mk1s.  Hence the need for using Audi carriers.

mk2 gti calipers of the 8v fit the mk1 but are no good to you unless you have mk1 gti or scirroco calliper hangers as the vented disk wont fit into the solid disk caliper hanger unless you get it machined, mk2 8v's don't have caliper hangers they r built into the wheel hub.

If the driver has the same front brakes as the 1.6D you best put asbestos on your feet and cut a hole in the floorpan  8O
The best thing to do is put say a golf GX front calipers and carriers on,thats what i did to my diesel, then i put vented discs on and gti pads(thinner material) the gti and the gx use same calipers,vw type 2, the only difference is the thickness of the pad to match the thickness of the disc
ie solid 12mm disc and standard fat pads or vented disc with skinny pads

Thats not a rod knockin, its a diesel stupid! floppy top and 1 tin top
