MK1 Clipper modifications?
I currently have a slot booked for thephirm.co.uk for the first of August to get some work done to my Mk1 Golf Clipper but I am unsure of what to get done. I don't want to go crazy and put another engine in & I am only looking for about 130 BHP or if possible 150 BHP. I need some advice on what mods can be done.
Its a 1.8 8v auto.
I am going to have a full engine rebuild, port & polished, some sort of chip…but I can't find one for the MK1 (but thephirm say they can source this). I was thinking about getting twin 40 webbers, but after reading some reviews they have a few problems & consume too much fuel. Some sort of exhaust system & maybe a piper 285 cams?
Can anyone give me any other pointers as to what I can get them to do. I'm looking to spend about 2.5k in total, that also includes a full paint job.
Thanks in advance!

Do you need an auto? If so, then you'd need to stick with the Clipper, since GTIs never came as auto.

So "The Phirm" are trying to sell you a chip for a carburettored car?
I'm not sure of the details as yet, but they said they could source it, i'll get the details and let you know. I think I'll just get the engine cleaned up, lower it a bit & some deep dish alloys (already got) + paint job & sorted!
I am very happy with the Car, so no need to go nutz!

Seriously, think carefully before throwing a load of cash on rebuilding a a Clipper engine. For the same money you could have a 2l 8V, or 16v conversion etc.
All that work an you'd end up with an engine that still can't match a straight up GTI :dontknow:
