Mk1 Cab Engine Upgrade ~Automatic????

Hey folks,
Im throwing this one to the pack cos i'm in need of some direction!
I  have a 87 mk1 cab 1.8 carb auto.
I want a whole new upgrade package engine, gearbox (auto) etc.
I need some ideas of how and waht i can do and also what goes with what???
I'm thinking either 1.8t or the 16v but am not sure of the autobox options.

Please help.

Never seen an Auto box on either of those engines , does it have to have an Auto gearbox ?

yeah, my friend can only drive a auto due to a very bad broken leg!
so we need to source this problem.
any ideas?
any setup will be considered.

Wait till the leg is better and fit a 20v T . Sorry never seen a conversion with Auto box . What is wrong with the current engine ?

it can be done use a mk2 auto box then find a auto box throttle body that can fit on to a 20vt lump for the kick down anything is possible mate :wink:

The main problem with an engine conversion on an auto car is that the auto is only 3 speeds and there's a very limited set of ratios (basically, the same ratios and just 2 choices of final drive, which are very similar). So, a more powerful engine, will feel/appear undergeared. And that's also considering Mk2 auto boxes in addition to Mk1. As I understand things, Mk3 and later 4 speed autos are simply too big to neatly fit into the Mk1 engine bay, etc.

So, its possible, but with a bit of a compromise on the (low) ratios.
