hello mate , theres a few ways of doing this conversion, the way ive done it is use and lessen the width of the mk2 rallye rear beam to fit within the mk1's sills, then removed the rear wheel well and weld it up so its a flat panel and gives you room to put in a rear supporting beam to fit the newly modified rear rallye beam. I used the haldex diff instead and got hold of the kit from dutchdubs to convert the rear beam . Then get hold of a new mechanical haldex controller so that you can change what percenatge power you want going front to back ie 50/50 etc etc. Its all easy and i could go on and  on  . the only thing you will have to get made is custom drive shafts for the front  if your going to use the o2m six speed box and a custom propshaft??. The other way of doing it is buy a syncro or rallye and cut the floor pan out of it then get the mk1 on a jig and pull it over the mk2 rallye/syncro floor pan and weld away!! That way everything pretty much bolts up. sorry i cant give anymore but im loosing my valuble lunch hour!! haha . Good luck .

Intresting stuff.

Saw a couple of 4X4 Syncros for sale on piston heads and was wondering how cool it will be to have a 4X4 MK1

Will be intrested to see the build thread.

I no longer have the Mk1!! I now whizz round in a Black 1990 3dr Mk2 GTi 8v but the roof doesn't fold back when the sun shines :o

yeah just been to look at that one in the link and it needs lots doing rear beam has not been narrowed so the back end will be way too wide.

too much money to rip apart and start again.
