Mk1 20v turbo 2 fuel pumps ?

Has any one had to put two pumps on there conversion as i have been having issues with the 044 priming on start up and when needing it on demand i.e high boosting it splutters, some one has said to pump a pump in-line from the tank to help push fuel to the 044, if so what pump?? another 044 ???

Depends on what models fuel tank you started with - the cabriolets and some late Mk1 GTi's had lift pumps fitted in their tanks

You need a lift pump from a late cabby or Mk3 polo GT. it fits straight in the top of the 1.3 tank.

Most people doing conversions use GTi tanks they don't need the lift pump as they are gravity fed.

The Mk1 Golfs older and better looking sibling……..

hi, i have 2 X Bosch 044 running my 16V Turbo with Nitrous @ 2bar boost and no issues. We were fortunate that we had a fuel injection model in SA right up until 2011 and the tanks are all gravity fed. 16mm outlet that goes into a Y piece that feeds both pumps. Gravity fed is the best route. You may want to consider a surge tank as well.

you also need a fuel reservoir between the pump and the lifter unit. also found on the same cars as the lift pump you need so late cab/rocco and g40 shape polos (ALL g40 shape polos, even the 1.0 have the lift pump and reservoir)

no need to fit 2 pumps for this car, the 44 is just about the best you can get.

Ok i'm a little confused here by you saying a  fuel reservoir you mean a petrol tank yes?

its a small square plastic box, with 4 outlets on it. feed and return from lift pump, feed to pump and return from engine. its there to ensure the main pump never runs dry :)

most if not all bosch inline pumps rely on the fuel to lubricate the pump internals, if they run dry they will struggle, then eventually start to overheat and die.

on the tintop this is taken care of by having the outlet to the pump on the bottom of the tank, plus an internal swirl pot. on later cabrio/rocco and g40 shape polos they switched to a lift pump unit plus an external fuel reservoir/swirl pot as above.

on the mk2 golf this problem is solved by putting the main pump inside a big plastic box which acts as a cobo pump/swirlpot assembly

lift pump better off going 2nd hand, you need the complete assembly including level sender.

big boys toys used to sell the reservoir. tbh anything fuel safe with 4 connections on it of a similar shape would do, plenty of aftermarket swirl pot designs available. as i say you want 4 outlets for it to work right mind
