Mk1 16v
Its probably been asked before but does any one have or know of a How to guide for fitting a 16v engine into a mk1, I have been offered a H plate corrado with 90000miles on the clock and a 50mm intake manifold for ?200 Its a complete car which has been smashed up on the drivers front wing but it did no damage to the engine So what else would i need to do this conversion and how hard is it  I have a well stocked unit with most tools a big pit and a overhead hoist

HI
your going to need a 4 branch manifold which will be your most expensive part
you will need to change brake master cylinder for a mk2 1 so it misses the dizzy
gearbox use a mk1 gti as i think corado is cable change
anyone else with sum advice for this guy :dontknow:

Would the corrado master cylinder be ok? can i use my 1600 box with the 16v, the 1600 has very short ratios so i dont know if it will suit the 16v engine

1.6 box would work with your cluctch but may not last very long your better of using the mk2 gti master also you will need to move you fuel lines to the other side of the engine bay

fitting 16v is fairly straight forward i done mine with mk2 16v 1800(9a block waiting to go in)
choice of exhaust manifolds
ashley mild steel
supersprint
i got a ashley which i bought second hand (wouldnt buy one new) ok quality but the supersprint is the better one
Yea you need change mastercylinder to clear dizzycap ,also may need right angled cap from pug or mk3 golf check clubgti website.May be worth fitting larger servo from corrado
I ran mine with mk1 1800 box for 18 months with no problem, but now gunna fit 16v box with larger cabby driveshafts

Exhaust manifold and fitting air box are probably your two biggest issues.
You could use the corrado exhaust manifold if its the same as a mk2 golf one and have the down pipe modified with a slight kink.
The metering head will go onto a cut down mk1 airbox on the o/s chassis leg, or you could splash out on a 16v scirocco set up with manifolds etc.
?200 is well cheap though.

are you getting the complete car for 200?
if so it might be worth your while because you can sell the extra stuff to pay for the extra bits you need which arent on the corrado, you dont actually say how complete the corrado is tho so dont know your position regarding this.
However tho if your prepared to travel and willing to spend a couple hundred more my cousins converted mk1 16v is up for sale in the appropriate section and comes with all the extra bits youd need for the mk1 conversion(except the gti fuel lines which i pinched but youve allready got)good engine,(chains and belts done last year during swap), gbox, d-shafts and brake conv.
it took a knock in the rear quarter so nothing mechanically wrong except panel damage and mibs a bit of a rear stub pin knock(would need trailered probably).
I know youve got the corrado engine lined up but the amount of spare/new bits you also need extra to the donor for the swap is pretty substantial really and this being the third such swap ive been involved in(my brothers convertible 16v, my mk1 jetta 16v and his early 5drmk1)know how easy it is to become de-railed by missing/needed bits which rapidly bang an engine swap over budget

Yes mate i am getting the whole car for ?200, the damage is only to bodywork, mechanically its fine Its going to be a longish project so i am selling bits of the corrado to fund other parts, do you have to use the GTI box or is it possible to use the corrado box :dontknow: and advice would be appreciated

is the corrado a cable change? if so youll either need to do major mods to either the box or inside, anyway the linkages are different from the mk1 to the (mk2)16v box, ive used a 1.8 16v engine and box in mine from a mk2 with im sure(done the swap on mine 4-5 years ago)mk1 linkages. Youll also need to get a new manifold(i used the ashley)as the 16v downpipe hits the gear linkage, steering and arb, youll also need to slightly mod your loom, i hate sparky shit and my mates have always sorted this out but from what i gathered from their ramblings was that a mk1 gti k-jet loom is only missing a couple of bits basically to run the 1.8 16v. Your fuel system may be up to running the valver(my cousins using the 1.8 8v set up(which im stealing lol)in his conversion and it was running fine, however im not sure of max flow rates/differences in the different mk1/2 pumps or if indeed there are any. Returning to the box area i used a combination of late convertible inner cvs scirroco shafts and scirroco outers.
there are quite a few parts youre missing from just using the corrado gear but this engine is definately my favourite swap into a mk1 and always wish vw had actually made one for proper

I am also doing a 16v conv but it is a 2.0l engine i'm using
Mine will eventually run on throttle bodies but i will runn it in on k-jet to begin with as the engine needs running in
I was advised against bending fuel pipes but instead install new ones to correct side
As for manifold i'm using a rocco 16v manifold and downpipe as i want to stick with oem parts for reliability
I will use cable change box, again, for reliability reasons but will convert clutch for cable instead of hydro
As for shafts i'm using 1.8 gti shafts and will change output flanges on my box to accept 90mm inner c/v joints
PM me if you want to go rocco 16v exh manifold route as i have one spare 8)

Hi, This is my first post on here, so hello everyone!
My mk1 has been off the road for a couple of years, but I now have the money and motivation to want to get it back on the road. At the moment the car has a tweaked 1800 8v engine. Unfortuantely the crankshaft bearing has gone, so I either need to replace the bottom end or I am tempted to install a 16V engine.
If I was to install a 16v engine, I am worried about bending 23 year old fuel lines, so would prefer not to do that. I know you can buy a scirocco set up, but that's mega money and there doesn't seem to be any for sale anywhere??! Is there a way of extending the the original fuel lines to the other side of the engine bay, or do fuel lines designed for a mk2 16v that will fit??
Hope you can help.
Anthony.

Welcome to the forum butleraw!
Living in sunny bournemouth 8) You jammy tinker!
If you`ve got the time `n` money, go the whole hog and stick a 16 valver in; as you`ll probably regret not doing it if you fix your 8v.
Get it done over the winter, then you will be able to show it in the classic car parade that they have over the summer next to the sea life centre!
