MK1 1.3 Driver Engine Swap to 1.6 GTi

Hello!! I just bought a 1600 reconditioned GTi (injection) engine intendint to swap for my clapped out 1300 driver.  I havent had time to look at the engine mounts and also foolishly didnt research their compatibility.

I was wondering how difficult this swap is going to be.  How much modifing will be needed.  Will it be a case of welding new mounts or should i bother?

Any constructive suggestions will be greatful.

Cheers

Where did you get the engine from, and do you have the option to go and buy the rest of the car?

Here's an approximate list of things you'll need, off the GTI:

Fuel tank
Fuel pump
Fuel accumulator
Fuel lines
Fuel pump relay and electrics (fusebox??)
Airbox
Gearbox
Driveshafts
Most of gear change mechanism
Exhaust

Desirable:

Dashboard
Brakes
Wheels & tyres
Suspension

If the GTI is rotten but the engine/mechanicals are fine, and the Driver has good bodywork, it might be worthwhile. Will be worth making sure you can insure it, too.

Cheers for the quick reply.

The guy i bought it from had recently put it in a mk1 he got from a scrappy and his feet went throught the well when he stamped on the brakes so the car is a gonner.

Im gonna need most of the fuel system,  ive got the airbox, gearbox + change mechanism, driveshafts and exhaust.

Will the front suspension system be compatible?

Front suspension should be compatible - the only differences are that the GTI is 20mm lower, and has an anti-roll bar.

If you can source that from the donor GTI then it should bolt straight on - it's probably worth changing the bushes all round, and renewing the top mounts - get genuine VW or Febi ones, not cheapo ones from GSF ;)

The rear is also 20mm lower, and again has an anti-roll bar. It's easy enough to retro-fit the anti-roll bar to your rear beam, but again getting the stuff from the donor car would be easier.
