MK1 1.1 engine swap to GTi engine??????? help!!!!!!!!!

Hello All,

I'm looking to get a mk1 GTi project car, but being on a budget, they are hard to come by cheaply, unless they are rusted wrecks.

So i was thinking, i'm looking at a '81 1.1, which is in really nice condition and has almost no rust, its going pretty cheap too.

But how much hassle is it to do an engine conversion in the weedy 1.1? i'd be looking at least putting a mk1 gti engine in, or something bigger.

Should i just keep searching for that GTI, or go for the smaller model and do the conversion?

any help, advice and tips would be really appreciated.

Thanks
Austin

to upgrade to just a gti is a lot of work!! (trust me ive done it)

the only reason i did it was i had a complete donor acr but even then i still needed some extra parts.

if you gonna go to all the effort go for somet better  8)

to swop to a gti you need to

move the engine mount
fit new fuel lines
fit a fuel pump and accumultor brkts
fit mounts for the air box
new wiring looms front and back and fuse box
and like i said theres always other bits you need to do.
the thing is your gonna have to do this to upgrade to a gti 8v so why not go for something bigger

A few important bits you forgot:

Fit Gti Fuel Tank
Fit Big Block steering rack (Has gear linkage mounts on it)

Will also need gearbox, driveshafts, brakes and suspension to go with that Gti lump!!!

Unless you have a donor Gti, it really is hard work (and possibly expensive!) collecting all of the required parts.

Thanks for the advice lads, by the looks of things i'm just asking for more trouble trying to do it this way. I know i'll end up replacing most parts on the gti anyway but at least i'll have more of an idea what ill need if i've got a gti in the first place!!!

I did see a half decent looking gti that had been "rescued" from a scrap yard. But does that mean i'll have trouble registering it back on the road when its done. when a car is scraped is it the end of the road?!!!

thanks again
