This conversion was done to my golf for me a few years ago, but it was just the bottom end that was used from a mk3 GTI. The rest of the engine was from a 1.8 Kjet, thats the easiest way of fitting one to a mk1 in my opinion. That way you dont have to worry about any extra wiring issues.

There should be a load of threads on here explaining how to carry out the coversion.

the conversion is straight foward if you are starting with a 1.6 or above if not then you will have to cut out and move the drivers side mount back. i would recomend using the earliy head out a mk2 or 1 as they are same as the mk3 head for fitment but relisers more power you will also need a plate made to blank a breather pipe if you are using the mk1 or 2 head and you will need to custom the dizzy to. but becase the block is taller some times as daft as it sounds the down pipe can catch on the floor of the car but not hard to sort out. there is freds on here to help and i have probably missed somthing but somone on here will fill you inn. good luck,

Here's where I bought my conversion oil blanking plate, oil blanking core plug and dizzy adaptor ring from. Good quality kit and not a bad price:
