lup0/polo 1.6 16v engine conversion? 6n

Hi, does anyone know anymore about the above, or in fact done it, is it true the engine mounts are the same? was thinking of sodding around and getting the lupo dash in there too and hopefully have air con, 125 brake as standard sounds great and after an engine with good ecnomony that still goes..

any help greatly appreciated

honestly I think it not really worth it for 125bhp, the original 1.8 gti engine has 112 already and you could bump that up to 125 fairly easily I reckon, free flowing air filter, exhaust, a bit of porting and flowing and a cam should see you around there.
plus the polo/lupo engine will be ecu controlled so theres all the messing about with wires, and all the other headaches you get with an engine swap…

I don't think you'd see much of a difference in economy either really, its all about how heavy your right foot is

what you might get is a difference in the way the power is delivered - I expect the 16v could be a bit more 'peaky' so would make a great engine for a track day car, but for the road the 8vs grunt is probably better, I guess it depends on how you like your cars….

having said all of that, if you've got the time, patience, money, skill, and know how and just want to be different I think it could be a very interesting swap, certainly be cool with the 6 speed 'box 8)

only advantage i could possibly see is the 35-40 mpg granny driving you can get out of the newer engine which youll never get out of a tuned 8v. nice reavy ebgine but much easier swapping in a k-jet 16v than the 6n2 1600 as it comes with dbw throttle, mega wiring etc etc

I guess maybe it would also be an interesting project for the future.

I can't help feeling that over time classics like the Mk1 will be slowly squeezed off the road by tighter and tighter emissions regs, even for older cars.

One way of bypassing this is to come up with conversions that use modern engines and exhaust systems, like the conversion you describe here.

I think it would be interesting to see a Mk1 converted in this way, especially if you could somehow keep the interior / dash / gearstick looking original. Wiring would be an absolute nightmare though I would have thought. Might just be easier to use the loom from the new car and adapt as necessary?
