Settling In
loosing coolant
as stated im loosing coolant ,put car up on ramp and looked under and the coolant is coming out of back of engine below manifold ,there are 3 circilar shapes and the coolant is coming out the middle circle nt sure if its meant to be open or is it a blank missing or what ,any help would really be appreciated as im not very good under the bonnet(kind of new)to this.hope this all makes sense and thanks brill site

my guess is you have a rotten core plug, these are circular metal plugs fitted after the engine block has been cast during manufacture to block up the holes once the casting sand has been removed. all engines have these. the problem is getting to it to remove it as access is difficult. simply punch an old srcew driver through the middle of it and lever it out, clean the surface where it was fitted, tap in a new plug evenly all round. job done, hope this helps you

hey bud thanks.the plug is acctually gone any idea where to get one and how much you think it would be.and how is it fixed to engine?

you could try gsf link from this site failing that vw should have them, a couple of quid for the part, as stated earlier they just tap in and are kept in place by a NO tolorance fit, you could put some sealer on the contact surface before you tap them in, be care full not to tap them in to far as they will go into the water jacket and can be tricky to fish out, if the plug is rotten i would change all 3, enjoy
