Looking to start off with a dashboard conversion

Hey guys,

First mod I want to make is to drop a nice newer dashboard in to the. i would like to have got a citi golf dash sent over from S.A but unfortunatley I think they only do RHD and my car is a spanish LHD.
from what i gather its a skoda fabia dash, but i think with some mods.

So I'd like to know which dashes go in without too much fuss and what looks best.
I'd love to see any pictures of your converted cars if you have any, for inspiration.

Cheers
B

Why dont you go mk4 stlye. If im correct they were making mk1 style golf in south africa until very recently and through time the interior has seen upgrades. i see in a performance vw mag about a year ago this interior of mk1 although they call it something else. the inside was mint just like my bros mk4 and it looked good. research it. it may be you easiest option regarding the swap as i would imagine it would be fairly direct.

why dont you leave the dash? Dont you appreciate the oldness/ retro feel when you get in and drive your mk1?

yeah i hear ya!
the SA golfs use (from what i can tell) a slightly modified (less deep) skoda fabia dashboard.
i was well up for doing this but unfortunately all cars in SA are RHD my motor is in spain and is LHD so as far as that route is concerned I'm goosed!

so far i like the look of the audi tt dash, or the golf mk4 dash, but then thats probably because i havent seen much else.
still trying to find other pics for inspiration….

or of course I could go mental and get a mk4 cortina dash in it! hahahha

I've seen Corrado, E30 BMW, 6N polo, TT and Mk2 Golf dashes fitted in Mk1 Golfs. I still think the Mk1 dash is a hard one to beat though it just suits the shape of the car!

Al_Mk1 has fitted a 6N dash and Willowraf or Dom123 have TT dashes (see their build threads in 'Your Mk1 Golfs & Projects' section).

Given that it would never quite work as it ought to, or have too few or extra switches for other stuff, I can't see the value in doing a dash conversion. Can you explain why you'd want to do one?

well I dont speak for everyone I'm sure, but its nice to be different, making your car custom is all part of the fun, isn't it?
I've seen some pretty tidy looking dash conversions, namely teh mk4 golf and tt dashes. i think its nice to mix some modern luxury inside the car with the classic look outside.

just my two penneth, each to their own I guess.?

Yeah no worries if it all works. But the more 'modern' the dash, I imagine the more stuff it might have which is either unnecessary, or can't be made to work quite right. For example you'd need some kind of adapter for the speedo. And things like ESP, air con, etc would all need to be blanked off for a neater apperarance. There must be loads of other bits & bobs along the way too. And also with most cars being slightly wider than the Mk1 Golf, then a cut will need to be made somewhere -I've seen dash conversions where the vents were done away with!
