kr boring

im considering replacing the 1300 engine in my golf with a 1800 kr lump. my question is can the kr lump be bored out to reach a capacity of 2.0 litre? if so is this advisable or is there an easier 2 litre engine i could source and fit? cheers. dave

There's no real point in boring out a KR when you can simply use a 9A or 6A block, which are the same height, and have all the same fittings, so its an easy swap and you can achieve 2l. The 6A was found in some Audis and a couple of the bolt on items are designed for in-line rather than transverse use (sump, therefore oil pump pickup, inlet manifold, possibly more?) so its easier to start with a 9A engine. They're found in Corrado 2l 16V and Passat GT 16V.

There's also the ABF which is a 2l 16V (found in Golf GTI 16V Mk3 and some Seats) but this is a taller block (I think around 16mm taller), also it was designed for Motoronic rather than KE-Jetronic FI. Other than the tallness and the differences for EFI its the same as the 9A. Its stroke is the same but the rod length is longer, which reduces the rod ratio and makes the engine smoother.

But no you cannot bore it out for 2 ltr, only just under 1900 i think is achieveable. to get full 2 ltr means bore and stroke it. so previous advice is good.
