If you were going to put a V8 into a Mk1 Golf.....

…..would you:

a) Track down a Northstar or Volvo XC90 to put it in transversely and driving the front wheels? (For example: http://www.forumeter.c…ideo/11416/Coupe-DeGolf-1)

or

b) Put it in longitudinal, RWD (Example: http://uk.youtube.com/…sy6qbPc4c&feature=related).

Obviously, both would be a lot of work and the engine bay would be a little cramped. Both have their specific advantages and disadvantages:

Transverse

- Retain much of the original bulkhead, so interior space isn't compromised.
- Probably less fabrication or 'rebuilding' work, since although the front half of the car would need major work, the rear can stay similar (axle, fuel tank, etc)

Longitudinal

- Much wider choice of engines and transmissions, so could go for higher power, etc.
- Better weight distribution - engine can be mounted further back

Any thoughts?

I would be driving the rear wheels as i think it would give better results, and would probably be easier.

Rear wheel drive may be more fun to drive.  So my choice is that one.

Don't think the Mk1 would be wide enough to take a transverse V8. I think the issue would be the box, so longitudinal for me. That way you could cut into the bulkhead and re-fab a new wall and tunnel. Why a Northstar or XC90? there are so many decent much better producing power V8's to consider.

nice thought though …… mmmn

Those 2 V8s are transverse FWD ones. Unless you know of any more?

Put it in RWD, but why not get anR32, then an old porshe to get thebox and
axle off and it will fit altogether

I think the porsche box would have the engine sticking out the back of the car, unless it would work turned around.

nope the early 924 turbo's i think it was that run the VW 8v turbo'd, so
with the engine in the frt of this, you get the full set up for the rear, stick
a R32 in with it instead of the 8v. and have the bell housing re drilled to suit

As a matter of fact, yes. This is only if "I" were going to attempt to do this, not advice.

Find a car as close to the same car, wheel base and size, that has a complete frame under it. Remove its body, cut the frame to fit under the Golf. If it did not have a V8 then weld in mounts for one. Cut away whatever needs to be cut for the Golf to drop onto the frame. This will take care of steering and the drive axle both. I've seen some drag Bugs done this way so there has to be some framed cars close enough in size to make it work. Inside might need some modifications, transmission tunnel and so forth, but we are talking custom here.
