How to make my 1.6 mk1 go...

Hi all,

I have a 1979 Golf GLi that i bout a year ago for my 15 b'day. Painting is almost complet on it and the interior wont take to long so the next step will be the engine.

I was just lookin for some information on how to give the 1.6 a bit more power with out spending alot of money. Keeping in mind that i am in australia and most new vw parts need to be imported  :banghead:
Also need some info/advice on brake kits and suspention.

Thanks in advance.

Is carb better then injection? I was told that if i swap the injection for a Audi double carbi it will add 20-30hp, but i find it stupid to change newer injection for the older carbi. The engine is goin to be taken apart and im guna put new pistons, lifters, exhaust etc. to make it like new. Dont know how far to go in the way of giving it more power, i dont wana go too far but i also dont wana be left behind at the trafic lights.

Thanks for the help, dont know if ill swap the injection for a carbi though.

Hey chap doing this mod as we speak! I have a 1984 1.6GL which is under powered on the Cabrio shell due to weight. The head is getting on a bit and taps due to being a solid lifter. So time to give a little Mod.

So far i have

Bought a Weber 32/34
Bought a DigiFant 1.8GTI head cam Hydo followers

The Head has to be modded to take the Carb inlet manifold by blocking up the Injection holes. This i have done with Liquid metal.

At the moment i am doing a De-coke and lapping the vlaves in. Also a Very slight DIY polish and porting, not going too far with this. I found a great Website for info on this.
Sa-MotorSports.com is for sale | HugeDomains

Exhaust and manifold will either be a 1.8 GTI or go custom  stainless.

When the head is finished and fitted, going for a rejet on the weber. Rolling road it as well with tuning on the webber.

Hopefully from 75HP to 90+. I have read lots from other peeps and their figures  its all good. Some peeps have reported over 100HP. With a wilder cam you will gain more.

Its not really exspensive to do as the head, exhaust can be got from a good Mk2 GTI. Just takes time and a little cash.

Hope that tickes your taste buds
Andy

Thanks for the info man. I realy dont wana get rid of the Injection, i figure put in biger injectors, K&N should do it for the injecion. Then new pistons etc. and port and polish.

Is there a way to put a pod/cone filter intake thing on, i think u know what i mean. Ive seen it on a cabrio in a mag, instead of having a air box he had a pod filter.

One more question, is it expencive to increase displacement? (bore and stroke) to a 1.7 or 1.8.

LOL @ "Its not really exspensive to do as the head, exhaust can be got from a good Mk2 GTI. Just takes time and a little cash."

I live in Australia, so its not that easy to find a early GTI. I have not seen or heard of there being a mk3 gti here.

Thanks for all the help guys

ahh!! :banghead: . yours is a Injection, sorry thought it was carbed. I would leave it to injection. Only real mods would be either change pistons/crank gas flow the head and change the cam. But its not the cheapest.

Induction and exhaust would be the first steps.

Let us know how you get on, cheeerz

Ill post pics up as soon as the respray is complet.

Plan is to do color then exterior (grill, lights etc.) then interior then ice then rims tires suspeting brakes and finaly the engine.

Should be done mid way through next year or at the end of this year i hope. If that seems a bit slow it coz i got school among other comitments.

Being in australia im probly guna need alot of help with finding parts and doing mods and stuff so if u have any good likes that would be cool.

Thanks for the help guys.
