Its not supposed to operate unless the key is in the ignition but not switched on, as Its supposed to be a fail safe so you cant "accidently" open or close the roof whilst moving, which would absolutely wreck the hood/frame as it would be like a giant sail!!!

cant see why it would be a problem to leave as intended? if you have a tonneu cover in use :dontknow:  you would have to stop and remove that before operating the roof if you drove into some rainy weather :dontknow:

If I had a cabby with electric hood, I'd wire it up so it worked all the time. Maybe you can do a little trick using a relay and the handbrake switch, so it only works with the handbrake on?

i prefer the manual approach nothing quite like jumping out at a set of lights and throwing the roof down

My 1990 cab can raise with the car running, and its the original roof so no mods. i didnt think vw were advanced enough in eleccy hoods to stop them running when the ignition was on?!

Well it shouldnt, as its designed as a fail safe like most cabriolet cars, to stop accidental damage whilst moving, it clearly states this in the original hand book, i can post a picture of the text if needs be

Someone has wired your hood directly to a permanent live at some point as vw never did this for the safety reasons, also its illegal to drive in Germany without a tonneu cover over the open hood so you would have to be stationary to fit that on i guess
