How much power from a 1.8 8v engine?

Hey,

Recently finished a 16v conversion so have my old 8v engine spare and I was thinking, in my spare time and with spare cash I might see what power can be gotten out of the 8v engine.

Will it be worth it? as I do prefer 8v to 16v cause I'm a lazy driver :p

Perhaps.. overbore, head work and cams etc or perhaps even turbo?

Or.. just take that money and spend it on the 16v cause it's already making 70bhp over standard 8v anyway..

Views and opinions welcome :)

Obviously depends what you're doing it for, but in terms of pure BHP the best of the old Slick50 MK1s were hitting 160-170BHP.

i've just bought an 8 valve engine that makes 167bhp…although it is a lightened and balanced 2 litre with a pretty wild cam. there is an advisory thingy with the engine from the rolling road test that says it will make even more power if a 4 branch was fitted and the fuelling was sorted out as its still on k-jet and it's struggling to flow enough fuel  :dontknow:

i reckon a decent amount of power is achievable…..providing you throw alot of cash at it!

167bhp from a 2 litre 8V without properly sorted fuelling?

well when i say it isn't properly sorted, i mean its restricted by the amount of fuel that k-jet will flow, its just me wording things craply lol! so finding a way to sort that will be next on the agenda….early saab 900 turbo metering head maybe? k-jet is nice and reliable so i'll be sticking to k-jet rather than carbs

the engine has come out of an old race car and has not long been rebuilt, i also have all the paperwork etc to confirm its output, although the RR test shows a 35 bhp transmission loss without any reported clutch slipping issues….so maybe they are exaggerated figures?

Transmission loss is about right Figures do sound exaggerated. Nothing wrong with stock metering head, don't try swapping with Saab stuff until you know what you're doing with the stuff you already have (ie measure what the AFR is).

yeh i figured they were probably exaggerated…i only bought it because it's a very fresh engine for not alot of money, rather than the claimed output. the spec isn't too bad either

its already got a 1600 metering head and 5 cyl WUR (back drilled off and adjusted) i was just going on what was said on the RR report really, i'm going to have a word with a bosch agent that i use through work and see if i can pick their brains and get some info first before i do anything

then a fresh RR run after the cars corrosion issues are sorted and it (hopefully) passes its first MOT its had in 7 years!
