How do I change my GTi Cab from K-jet to twin 40s

:banghead: Hello all, I fancy changing my 1990 1.8 GTi Cab to twin 40s. I have the inlet manifold already, and can get the carbs, and I know I will need a fuel pressure regulator to get the pressure right with the injection fuel pump but is there anything else I will need and how do I get it to run. if I take the K-Jet off will the black elecs box still spark for the ignition?

Also one other odd thing, when filling with petrol it takes forever, the pump keeps clicking off and I have to hold the nozzle half out - any ideas?

Oh and the brakes are rubbish - what is the best way to make it stop….

Hope you can help

Why would you want to take such a backward step ?

Oh and be prepared to visit the petrol station a lot more often !!

I run 256mm disks with Mk2 16v calipers and Audi carriers up front. Mk3 disks on the rear. A 9" mk2 servo and 22mm master cylinder. Goodridge hoses all round and copper nickel brake pipes. Fluid is Dot 4. Brakes are superb !!

Cheers,
Ade

Ah ok, thought running on the 40's would up the power and make a better noise. The brake servo is that a standard mk2 one or a 16v one-bit new to all this..

They will sound awesome !!

But I doubt you will see much gain in power, maybe even a loss. Fuel will disappear quicker.

Any 9" mk2 servo will do the job. Buy a new master cylinder, too risky to use a second hand one for about £30

You'd be better off leaving the car injection, unless you want to fully commit to carbs.
They aint an easy step or cheap run in terms of fuel consuption and set up costs.
The 8v don't have much room to work on them either.
There's no way you can just bolt them on and go!
Power can be increased or lossed dependent on the set up of the carbs.

Projekt Frustration :

White 1991 Clipper. Lowered over polished zender rims, Single 40 dellorto on lynx manifold, kent cam, full stainless 'zorst / manifold, powerflex bushed and braced. Not the fastest car, but sounds super nice!

Still going after 12 years… never said it was a quick fix! Time is not my friend.

filling up with fuel takes agers........,it sound like the non return flap has rusted shut, follow the filler neck down to where it meets the tank and take the rubber pipe off and push you finger in the hole,it should move the flap put back together and you should be sorted, for what its worth say with k jet,if you like the throaty sound of the carbs just get one of them roar pipes for the fuel inj :dontknow:

All is revealed in the Golf GTI Performance Manual written by Tim Styles of TSR fame ;;

Haynes ISBN 1 84425 101 2

Tim's advice is essentially as above (ie POSSIBLE but NOT RECOMMENDED).  There are lots of problems that are not readily obvious (like finding space, bunging up the Injector holes, new pump (approx 4 psi - not 40 psi !!!!) ad nauseum…….

Book is worth having as it also explains in detail about stopping your car
