Help?!?!

Hey guys

Just bought myself a tidy 82' 1.1 5 door, the only probelm is that the engine is a gonner! Anyway its no probelm i was planning to swap it for something faster

Well ive been searching through the forums and really am getting soo lost to which would be the best engine and gearbox for me. My dad (who owns a garage) and i bought the car as a sort of project for the summer. From what i can understand the mk2 1.8 gti gearbox (020?) is a good one for its long 5th gear?

and now the tricky part, im looking for a n/a engine probaly around 1.4 - 2L which is semi economical whilst still being (hmm fun  ) I see the mk4 golf engines are quite popular but they seem to be pretty expensive with all the little parts that is needed. Now im not too bothered if i go the ecu route or just carbs its whatever is best really.

I mean obviously there are a load of variables but any help that could get me searching the right way would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advanced

Tom

Problem is, you're starting from a 1.1, so engine mount (welding) suspension and braking mods are needed even before you look at the regular upgrades. There's small block alternatives such as 1.3, 1.4 or 1.6 from various newer Polos, but you'll need to do a little fabrication on engine mounts on some of them and also see to the brakes and suspension (and wheels and tyres) too. So, if its part of a bigger project, no worries, but if its just to swap an engine and get you going again, go for another 1.1 or 1.3 from a Mk1 Golf or the equivalent (same) engine as used in polos or later golfs (mk2 I think, used the same 1.3).

As I understand things, there's so little difference between 1.1 and 1.3 that you might as well seek the latter, for 10bhp more.

If your not bothered about all the fitting then maybe a g40 engine? means converting the car to fuel in jection, but you may be able to do a deal on ecu, engine and box. you won't be able to use the 020 box as your car is small block, the 020 box was only fitted on big block engines.

Alternatively switch your drivers side mount over for a big block mount, stcik with the carbs and build a 1.8 twin webered monster!

either engine would great fun, then again if your happy to do the work the worlds your oyster…

Hope that helps, also what paul said, you'll defo want better brakes!

well now ive looked into it im thinking about using a mk2 16v? on twin webbers, we bought the car as a project and understood that the drivetrain needed updating. Im planning to run coilovers anyway, brakes are obviously s**" at the moment! so they will be the first things to go.

Soooo if i were to want to put in the 16v on wbbers what will i actually need? i see theres guides for the 1.8t and vr6 engines but there doesnt seem to be many on the 16v?

Sorry for the newbie questions guys, just getting a bit excited

is that the abf 16v? as correct me if im wrong is an absolute pain to fit as its quite a long engine? so its struggles to fit under the bonnet without scraping on the floor? sure people have used them before tho so i will let people that actually know what there talking about tell me im completely wrong lol

it is slightly taller than the mk2 lumps bout 16mm i think. more of an issue closing the bonnet than scraping the floor people have found ways round it but couldn't tell you how….  :dontknow:

yeah its the abf, i dont no i havent actually got the car here yet so i wouldnt be able to see but im sure we can work out something. i mean its not too late to get another engine that one just seemed ideal and a nice strong motor to keep me going. I got the car pretty cheap aswell so thought why not!  :)

rear calipers can be used for a disc conversion on the back i think but apart from that and the lump not a great deal i'm afraid. as for the carbs something off a 1000cc bike should be about right for the airflow. they would need rejetting and a manifold making for them have a search for a company called bogg bros they specialise in this sort of thing so can point you in the right direction or do the work if your not tackling it.
