help with brakes

i need some advice, i have a 1.6l golf 1979, i wish to change all the four brake callipers and settings to that of a golf mk4 (as the parts are easy to get) or to a golf mk 3.

Could you say if it is possible, what all would i need.

Best regards

its do able….butu not cheap!

to convert the rear from drums to discs you will be looking at around ?300 by the time you have got new discs bearings, pads, calipers rebuilt / new calipers…

then for the front thats not that cheap too…. you can either go early mk3 calipers from the gti and have 280mm brakes but then you will need 15" wheels and even then some dont clear…plus you will need mk2 G60 discs which arent arent the cheapest..and you will need conversion brackets to allow the calipers to be mounted as they are a different stud spacing to the hubs and mount higher up too to get the bleed nipple in the correct place.

or you could go mk2 16v calipers with Audi 80 carriers as these match the mk1 stud pattern…..but the carriers are like hens teeth….

best idea is get saving and get reading up,

but either way you will also need the mk2 servo and mk2 16v master cylinder to move the extra fluid for the larger calipers… so budget on around ?500 all in

TBH it would probably be harder to source the conversion parts in  Mauritius than original components, if/when they need replacement.

thanks

i understand the cost factor, but as mentioned mauritius is a jungle when it comes to auto parts. i would like to restate what exactly am asking. if i can get the callipers from a golf 4 what would be the conversions to fit them on to a golf 1? would i need to change the whole hub or just the callipers and its brackets?

please advice. i wish to put in golf 4 as replacement parts like pads are easily avaliable the others like g60, audi 80 are non existant in mauritius. As normally parts for a car specially european more than 10 - 15 years old are close to impossible to have here.

I've never heard of anyone using Mk4 front calipers on a Mk1. Maybe they're the same as others? Or maybe you'd need to have custom brackets made up, or maybe they simply won't fit?

anythings possble….but you will need custom brackets and the mk4 hoses….and then you need to find 288mm discs in 4 stud….which is where you will fall down as there arent any    or if you use the smaller 256 ones from lower models like the 1.6 then you may stand a chance….but poss not as im not sure on the disc offset…
