help me find my engine!

ok the subject sounds a bit extreme but… the guy i bought my mk1 caddy from has replaced the standard diesel 1.6 with a 1.9 tdi engine… and i have no idea which model it is…  i know it came out of a passat… but thats it … please can some1 help me identify my engine… i can take pictures if needed or whatever.. please help…..

There should be a 3 letter code on the head, that will give you a good idea of the spec.

A very similar thread came up a couple of days ago. Basically, you want to find out the engine number, this will tell you what engine you have. It should be on your V5 (registration document). If not, can be found on the engine. Here is the relevant info I found (using the search):

All vw engines now have a code, I have 2 1.8t engines with codes AUM and AJQ, a search of these numbers and I can find all I need to know about the engine like its power, what car it was originally fitted in, what turbo is fitted.

Passat TDIs were AHH, AHU, AHH, AVG, AFB, AWX etc etc

example: an AWX is a 130bhp from a 2000 - 2003 passat and A4

also look for a sticker on the cam belt cover with this code on.
