Just about to do this myself, and its suprising the things you dont realise that you need.  There are loads of guides around, pm manicgti (i think) who has one.

My current list of things needed include: mk1 16v conversion exhaust manifold with flexi pipe, new fuel lines as you need to re-route them, different dizzy cap if you are sticking with the standard master cylinder, 100mm driveshafts (off a late cabby apparantly), apparantly an audi fuel filter.

Im sure there is other stuff but I cant think of it off the top of my head.  Doing mine next weekend so will prob know more then!!

oh yeah, a diesel rear engine mount too, and I was advised to look at front strut braces, particularly lower.

you dont need too much really…!

Exhaust Manifold (Ashley/Supersprint) or Scirocco 16v ex manifold.

Diesel rear engine mount, Polly front mount adviseable.

You will need to swap the Mk1 side engine mounts from the 8v engine to the 16v.

You can use the 16v fuel pipes just re-route them slightly. I advise you dont fit the fuel filter to behind the headlamp though. As it makes changing headlamp bulbs difficult and if you do thump something it could make a proper mess.

Fit the 16v metering head to the 8v air box. The 8v airbox fits quite nicely between the inner wing/chassis leg. Although you will need to trim the bottom of it slightly.

You will need to move the washer bottle. Get one from a Cabrio. But yo u will need to fabricate a bracket to hold it.

You dont have to run the full 16v loom. TSR used to make a conversion loom. This means you can run the mk1 idle stabilisation valve.
If you dont want to run the 16v ecu then you will need a Polo ignition loom, from an 87>89 car i think. This will mean you wont be running the correct ignition advance curve though. It is quite easy to modify the standard 16v ignition loom to fit and work properly though.

If you are running the 16v gear box it will have larger flanges. You can either remove the flanges and replace them with the mk1 ones (they are held in place with circlips which must be replaced with new ones, this is what I have done) or you can swap the drive shafts for scirocco or late cabrio ones.

You dont have to run a different distributor cap, I am not I have just fabricated new brake pipes to accomodate the fit. However Some have fitted different ones.

I have done swap, It is quite easy but the devil is in the detail.

Mine is now running on 40DCOE carbs, with a fully mapable ignition system in the pipeline (Megajolt Lite).

I have quite alot of info on the various areas, if you are interested pm me. However be pacient for the reply as I am out of the country quite frequently.

Cheers Johnathan
