GTI upgrades.

Its nearly a week and it looks like my new golf should be ready to pick up from the garage in the next few days after being in storage for 8 years the car recently had to get :
A new fuel pump.
A set of injectors
Plugs and leads.
A new metering head.
Fresh fuel.
Timing belt(request by myself).

Thats all to list just now but i expect more.

I was wondering about any upgrades that are worth doing as the car is still original.
I am not talking about "max power" type mods just little upgrades like headlamps/bulbs, brakes, shocks and general stuff like that.
Is it worth fitting strut braces etc.
I expect the hardcore owners to turn their noses up at these mods and say "leave as factory intended"

Any advice for a new owner?

Check the old campaign register forum for info on struts and other useful mods.

Good ones to do are:

Relay front lamps & upgrade bulbs
Lower front strut brace

People moan about the Mk1 brakes but I believe a well maintained and adjusted system is perfectly adequate.

Any one recommend anything else.

Thanks crazy. 8)
What bulbs do you recommend as there is heaps on the market nowadays and its hard to tell whats BS and whats good unless you have tried them.

My car has the Hella H4 conversion (i think it was a kit from BR Motorsports according to the invoice, from back in the early 90's). Highly recommended as the standard Mk1 units are closer to candle power in my experience  8O

If your gearchange is a bit "sloppy" then a new linkage kit should tighten things up a bit.

Aside from that I'd be tempted to budget for a new battery after 8 years in storage - its cheap and could save you being stranded. GSF have some decent Bosch ones for about 30 quid.

The 'mods' we have done, each of which have made a massive difference, (even though the cars are driven by 2 doddery old gits):

Relay front lamps & upgrade bulbs
Lower front strut brace
Pagid drilled and grooved discs, with pagid pads

and on the Clipper - a Weber replacement carb

Owning a Mk1 cabby is a vertical learning curve…

1989 Mk1 Clipper 1.8 automatic - Sadly now up for sale - medical issues dictate)

1999 (Nov) Passat S Saloon 1.9 TDI (AFN) - TUG 1 (Remap by CCC ( - **** …..change pants !!) with cruise control

2000 (Mar) Passat Sport Estate 1.9 TDI (ATJ) 5 speed automatic with Tiptronic - TUG 2 (Remap and cruise control by CCC)

I'm also going to stick my neck out on the mods and recommend some nice carpet mats!

Seriously, on the next oil change drop the sump and give it a thorough clean with new gasket. Same story for valve cover.

Cheers

mk2 16V brake set up is meant to be a good change, i haven't done it yet but fully intend to, you can't brakes that are too good! 16V calipers, servo, m/cyl and Ausi 80 caliper mount brackets are the main bits req.
