ow sweet have always wanted to see one done, dont mind the diesel engine cos there not noisy like they used to be and i bet with a bit of tuning you wud be able to get sum gud BHP, did he say how hard it was to do? wish i had a the cash to do it, the mk1's a real bonny car so you would have the looks, performance, reliability and economy! does anybody else no of anyone doing this at all

I looked into this, it's pretty much the same a a 20VT conversion.

There's a whole LOT of work that needs to be done, and it's not cheap I was quoted between ?5,000 - ?9,500 for the complete converstion.

If you want to do it yourself you'll need..

Engine + Gearbox & all ancillaries
Engine Mounts
New Fuel pump + piping
Lots of messing around with wiring (you'd have to by somehting like a megasquirt conversion - not cheap!)
Upgrading your brakes is a must.

I can't think of anything else at the min, but it's probably do-able yourself for around ?3,000 if you get the right engine.

This was based on the 5 speed gearbox, if you go 6 speed then it gets even more complicated cause I think you have to chop at the  sub frame to make it fit.

1986 Cabriolet (long resto!)
1983 Cabriolet (daily pain in the bum)
1983 T25 (weekend pain in the bum)

yeah seems like a lot of money you can buy the cars cheaper than that, but i bet its worth it, i got quoted a grand for the engine, gearbox and ancilleries which i thought was a good price out of an 02 plate golf, would have loved to have had a go im just no good with wiring, time on doing it wouldnt have been a problem its the cost and what if you get stuck who would be able to help
