Golf MK1 gti '77...With Audi 2.2 20v turbo.

Hello there,

In the coming 4-6 weeks I will be starting my first engine swap,KR 16v out and 2.2 20v turbo in.

I have been searching for a while now for a conversion guide on the 'net but to no avail.

I know the engine can go vertical using the stronger Audi box or standard horizontal with a donor box but then on front wheel drive….thats about it  :|

Any advice/tips or links would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers all,
Andy1976

wouldn't it be easier and cheaper with just as much power to fit a 1.8 20v t ?

or if it really is a '77 GTI put a 1600 GTI motor back in it. Prob be worth more than a turbo MK1  :dontknow:

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Can't see it being likely anyone has done a guide.  tbh the only one I remember was JPs on Ed38, and that was fully custom rwd etc.

Hello people,

Yes looking at doing the 5 cylinder 20v turbo "B'' or "AAN".

The idea did occur to me to strip it down and rebuild to standard everything i.e 1.6gti. However its more of a last resort.

As for the 1.8turbo conversion it seems every body has or is doing it. so it is still a possibility.

Does anyone know if the 2.0tfsi with six speed box has been transplanted yet?

Decisions decisions decisions…… 8O
