gearbox setup

does any one know the gear ratio in the standard 16v 020 gearbox?

i have the opportunity to buy a modified gearbox with lsd fitted but i don't know anything about them so i wanted to compare it to the standard gearbox.

the new gearbox has:

3.45:1 - 1st
2.11:1 - 2nd
1.44:1 - 3rd
1.13:1 - 4th
0.89:1 - 5th
vw final drive (cwp) 4.47:1
quaife LSD fitted.

what do you guys think? would this make a mega difference. The discription says "it's a gearbox that will put your teeth through the back of your head" lol

Standard 16V box (code 2Y, typically), is:

3.45 1st
2.12 2nd
1.44 3rd
1.13 4th
0.89 5th
3.67 Final Drive

Bear in mind the 16V box has a 24mm input shaft, unlike the stock 22mm shaft. Also it will have 100mm CVJ flanges, the stock has 90mm.

4.47:1 Final drive is incredibly low geared (standard 'close ratio' box is 3.89 for 1600s, 3.67 for 1800s) so that's 22% lower gearing all round.

In fact, I'd be asking questions about which pinion is on the output shaft, to achieve that FD.

16v 2y box has an 0.91 5th, it's the 8v boxes that have the 0.89

I done a few calculations, these figures are changing gear at 6500rpm and running 195-50-15's

Engine speeds in top gear:-
    30 MPH = 1769 RPM   40 MPH = 2359 RPM   50 MPH = 2948 RPM   60 MPH = 3538 RPM
    70 MPH = 4128 RPM   80 MPH = 4718 RPM   90 MPH = 5307 RPM  100 MPH = 5897 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 28.436 MPH
    And changes into 2 gear at 3975 RPM dropping 2525 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 46.494 MPH
    And changes into 3 gear at 4436 RPM dropping 2064 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 68.127 MPH
    And changes into 4 gear at 5101 RPM dropping 1399 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 86.817 MPH
    And changes into 5 gear at 5119 RPM dropping 1381 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 110.228 MPH
