Gearbox conversion?

Does anyone know if the audi 5 speed manual from the 5 cylinder '79 555 fit the 1600 golf?

The audi will be installed north-south and VWs are east-west so it may physically fix to the engine block but the drive shafts will be pointing 90degrees the wrong way :dontknow:

thanks for the reply but the audi we have is east-west configuration just not sure if anyone has done it before and if it can be fitted to the engine.  cheers
