  Hi everyone,

Still not found a decent base for my little project!!!! so if any1 wants me to buy their car then please PM me.

Back to the post anyway.
Once i have sourced the right golf im planning on an engine conversion and as per the title of this post its a G60 one. 1st i was wondering if any1 has some pics of their mk1 g60 that i can look at, and 2 can some1 please be a god send and post a list of bits i will need to make to conversion as smooth as possible, all advice is greatly appriciated and needed.

I will of course be up grading the brakes and suspension, i really just need advise and ruff price guides to the basics ie the transmission (can i keep the standard 5speed from the GTI, or is it best to use a 6 speed g/box), what mounting brackets do i need, what other parts do i need to complete the conversion.

Please please please help as this is un-known turff for me as it will be my 1st engine conversion.

Many thanks and i look forward to speaking to you guys.

Joe

I am in the middle of a similar project.

Regarding the transmission:

1.  You won't need a six speed; you will have a supercharger.  Unless you change your final drive considerably, you won't even need a five speed.  I would suggeest not using a GTI box at all (the gearing is too low).  I will be putting a regeared 02A transmission in mine (making new mounts).

2.  From what I have found, the 020 transmission will work, but it will wear very quickly.  If you have a lot of miles/kilometers on the transmission to begin with, you may knock some of the first gear teeth apart rather soon.  This may not be a problem, as first gear will be rather useless if you have standard GTI gearing.

Regarding everything else:

1.  As far as what parts are needed and which ones are not, I am not sure yet.  I bought a G60 car at an insurance auction and took everything out of it.  When the shell went to the wrecking yard, it had a winshield (uncracked) and outer skins for the doors, and a gas tank, nothing else.  I know I have everything I need, but I am also fairly certain that I have many things I don't need.  Check for insurance auctions, they are a great way to go.  The only people bidding against me we people who had to get it fo a low enough price that they could afford to sell to someone like me.  For about what it would have cost to buy a G-Charger alone and a transmission on eBay, I got a rearended car.

2.  I am told that the AC compressor won't fit, if you have an AC version, but I have not personally checked.  I was not planning on using the AC parts anyway.

3.  One thing to not overlook, you will need the vacuum/compressor deal that went into the later cars (every G60 or Turbo car, certainly) that works the hatch release, central locking, and vent controls (you will need it for the vent controls).  You will have to figure out how to make your vent controls function.  The stock system uses manifold vacuum, and you won't have manifold vacuum except when you are off of the throttle.

4.  I would advise power steering and limited slip differential.  You will have torque-steer concerns.
