G60 into Mk1 Golf - Easy or Hard?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience on doing this.  How easy or hard is it?  Rough price to have a pro do it?  I understand you need to move engine mounts etc.

Any advice will be gratefully received!

It depends on which model of Mk1 you've got - you won't need to move any mounts if it's a big block (1.5 engine upwards).

Rough price for the engine alone is ?1k +, and labour on top would be another ?1k at least, so I'd budget for ?2.5k to be on the safe side.

Having said that, it's not particularly difficult to do yourself, and even the wiring isn't that hard, so if you fancy a go at it yourself you could save quite a bit.

If you do go for it, make sure you buy all the associated pipework, intercoolers, oil coolers etc… that come with the engine, as this will make things easier and cheaper.

so are you saying that if you had a mk1 1.8gti you could easiy just take the old out and bolt the new one in.

would you need to change the gear box as well sorry to hijack thread but im thinking the same

even dream of the idea of a 16v g60

Yes - the engine itself is a straight swap. You'll need to mount the intercooler somewhere, and wire in the ECU (3 wires, or so I'm told).

Gearbox-wise I'm not sure - I think they're the same O2O box, but I'm unsure whether the ratios are the same. Gear Up! is a really useful website about gear ratios in VW gearboxes.

The gearbox is different, its an 02A instead of 020. Thus it will have a hydraulic clutch, cable change shift mechanism and the shape of it is different, meaning that it needs different mountings to the Mk1 bodyshell.

You can put an 020 tranny onto a G60 engine but common opinion is that its on the limit of how much power/torque it can handle.

if you uprate the shift rod mechanism and bearing for 1st gear in your standard mk1 gear box it wil handle the power fine. remember the bearing needs to be pre loaded.

simple conversion and lovely out come.

I'm also just about to undertake this conversion (just waiting for the engine to be delivered).
I have also been told that the standard 1.8 box will fit, but if unmodded wont last that long!

I have been told that it's a good idea to use an intercooler from a mercedes sprinter!??!

*****Has anyone done a post on the complete conversion.*****

Hi,

I have just had this conversion done to my Mk1 by Midland VW - very pleased with the outcome !!

This is what they used:-
Golf Rallye Engine, G60 charger and ECU, - Full strip and rebuild of engine and charger, it was already chipped and had the smaller pulley.
MK2 Golf 16V gearbox - this was fully stripped and rebuilt,
Radtec Radiator and intercooler - specifically designed to fit a G60 in a MK1
Supersprint stainless 4 branch exhaust - cast manifold found to be too restrictive - Lambda probe added to downpipe.
16V MK2 clocks - because my Mk1 clocks were knackered and these are easy to get hold of - they take some time to make fit properly though as the mountings are totally different.

It goes in for its 1000 mile checkup next weekend, so looking forward to see want power it is putting out on the rolling road :-)

Cheers,
Ade

Defo go for the rod change box 0-60 times are awesome.
charge cooler is good instead of a standard intercooler just depends how much cash you've got to burn.
