Fitting a mk1 diesel gearbox to a mk2 16v lump will it go.

My mk1 8v gear box syncro has gone on my mk1 so i was told that a diesel mk1 8v gearbox will fit and will be better because of higher torque capacity, will it fit on a mk2 1.8 16v engine which is what i've got i hope so because gonna find out this weekend if it dont fit.
will this effect the perfomance as well.

Have on good authority this is not a good idea , you need a late MK3 020 box from a standard 8v GTI . The drive shafts wil have to be uprated to 100mm type from a late Cabriolet or Scirocco model . Diesel box will ruin any acceleration you had .

Or why not find a 16v box  :dontknow:

He gets over 40 to the gallon and cruises from Rotherham to Newcastle at 80. It's not slow away from the lights either.
