First MK1 - Direction???

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to decide what direction to take my MK1 GTI Cab in (engine wise).

I was first thinking about the 1.8t (AGU) conversion, but a few friends have put me off the idea.

I'm now thinking of doing the Bike Carbs. just wanted to ask some advise……..

Do you think it is worth doing the bike carb conversion on an 8v GTI?

What sort of power do you think I could get up to without having to change the internals (yet)?

I can't really seem to find a whole lot of information on this when doing it on the standard GTI engine.

What kind of problems can i expect to run into?

Also can i use all the GTI fuel line?

Thank you for any comments,

Steve.

Put a 16v in it pal and keep it injection has to go to carbs you ditch gti fuel pump, regulator and return line plus you would have to get bits to run carbs when you could buy a engine for similar money. You could keep kjet too.

Plus im biased i had carbs and could not get on with them at all they need to be set up properly and then serviced and will need setting up again after time.

Injection once in and set up it stays that way and if engine goes bang just put another in lol

It dunt fit

Cheers for your reply,

I really did want to go the forced induction route.

The easiest engine swap seems to be the AGU but I have been told that they are not the best of engines.

If I was to go on carbs I would probably sell my one and by another as it would be a shame to kill a GTI for that purpose.

I keep changing my mind everyday on what to do.

Some people have said to Turbo the standard engine but I can't see that being the most clever of ideas.

If i was to turbo think i would go with bam engine but i think turbo is wizards at work stuff lol

Turbo original engine could start costing a fair bit as i would rebuild/recon the engine befor sticking a turbo on it and pushing it

Price for swaps are as cheap or expensive as you want however when i say cheap it can still cost £500 - £1000 and upwards thats doing it yourself however its worth it lol I have a 2.0ltr 16v abf in my cab and its great to drive pulls very well (quite quick) but also sits in 5th gear at low speeds so is good on juice too  :D alot better than my 1.8 16v kr on twin carbs that drank fuel no matter what.

It dunt fit

Well this will be the first engine swap i've done on my own on my driveway.

So trying to keep it as simple as possible.

The AGU is a lot cheaper to get hold of as far as I can see. Also I thought the BAM and AGU had different mounts do they not?

The only things I am struggling with is that I would like to run the MegaSquirt system but really get me confused everything i try to look into what i need and how to do it.

Also I want to give the loom ago myself so still trying to look into how that would work.

Even at that i can't seem to find a decent priced AGU lump anywhere.

Hense why i'm getting a bit confused as to what direction to go in lol.

iv done a drive way engine swap. i used a agu brought of ebay only to find out after 1yr when i decided to fit forged conrods it had a cambelt faliure. bam engines are to much they go for around £800 to over £1000. but you get a k04 turbo and some low milage engine. agu you can get for £450 to £600. im running megasuirt had my ecu built by toytec and loom built by rj. my m8 just breaking a mk4 20v agu so if you intrested i can pass you on the details he want £450 for complete engine and loom. what i learnt any engine you get best to whip head off and see whats it looks like inside, fit some new rings have bores honed get the head rebuilt and you have a good engine. i got a suprise trust me when i opened my ebay engine here my build thread page 5
