engine mods??what to change on a mk1?? help i'm a newbie

if i purchase a mk1 gti what are the things i should look at changing for safety's sake?
i would also like a little more power from the engine but don't want to affect reliability?

I know nothing of engine mods, but for safety have a read of the below for tips on upgrading the brakes before you go for more power.
