Engine conversion...which one?????

Planning an engine swap into my 1993 mk1 cabby.
Can anyone give me some opinions/advice on which engine to choose. Don't want to break the bank just buying and fitting the engine as got the rest of the restoration to fund too! Spoke to Volks-a-part (any one used them?) really friendly guy called neville quoted me 1400 quid for a fully re-conditioned (12 months guarantee) 1.8t 20v lump including ecu loom etc etc, basically he said evrything I will need for the conversion..true? Not sure about drive shaft, gear box, mounting brackets front axle etc etc. Am I getting myself into a BIG job. Will the 1.8 or 2.0 valve options be so much easier??
All help appreciated, cheers

No chance for ?1400 will all the bits be there, if you do a conversion on the cheap I think at best your looking at ?1500+ and that would mean fabricating some of the parts yourself.  It's quite a tricky conversion compared to some of the other optiions available.

Best bet for reasonable power, not too bad a budget and a fairly straightforward conversion is either a 1.816v or 2l16v.

Sounds like your talikn from experience

Hi mate, thanx for your reply. What sort of funds did you burn for your 20v conversion? Did you fabricate anything yourself or have it fully fitted somewhere. I'm not the sort to be able to start machinig parts etc. sort of leave all that to the experts. Was thinking 1500-2k all told for the engine inc. installation so if not the 20v what do you reckon i'm lookin at for a really good nick/maybe recon valver?

My engine was a bargain at 185 quid, plus some other new bits to get it sorted right, but my parts list still came to over 2k.  Plus you need to think about upgraded brakes, suspension etc etc.  And that's fitting it all yourself and not and labour costs.

I doubt for 1400 it will all be there to be honest.
