engine conversion

i am restoring a mk1 gls. it was 1.3 but the engine had been over heated. i stripped the engigine bay, interior and all the trim and got it resprayed white. i then started looking for parts (engine, gearbox to match and other smaller bits). finding it nearly imposible to find any of the engine parts i started looking for a mk2 to take the engine out of. i found a 1.6 in good mechanical order and i collected it yesterday.
i need to know exactly where the engine and gearbox mounts go and what else i need to take from the mk2,
cheers,
colton

Unfortunately - there is more to it than that!

Your car is a "Small Block" - You have bought a "Big Block" donor

You will need to relocate the drivers side engine mount (Cut off chassis leg turn 180 degrees, move back and re-weld) and also replace the steering rack on the Mk1 with a big block Mk1 (gti) version as it contains mounting points for the gear linkages which are completely different to yours. This also means you will have to get a Gti gear shifter and all gear linkages.

The next problem you will encounter is that your Mk1 driveshafts wont fit the Mk2 Gearbox and the Mk2 drive shafts are too long to use on the Mk1. You might get away with fitting the inner CV joints from the Mk2 shafts to your mk1 Shatfs, though I'm not sure if they will fit or not. Otherwise it is Cabby gti driveshafts…

Might be easier to sell the Mk2 and look for another 1.3…  :dontknow:

i know about the engine mount but what about the steering rack and the gear linkages from the mk2? will they not fit?
will any gti drive shafts do or do they have to be from a caddy?
i have the engine out of the mk2

Mk2 rack and linkages won't fit - no.
Need to get Mk1 items…

And the drive shafts from a CABBY Gti not CADDY.
Other than that, Scirocco GTX/Gti should fit also (I used Rocco GTX shafts…). Just measure the inner CV joints to make sure they are right for the drive cups on the Mk2 Gearbox.

And don't forget the brakes - you will need bigger vented Disks and appropriate calipers off a Gti. (Or Scirocco such as the GTX/Gti you nab the shafts from… ).

Good hunting!
AL.

If your looking for a different option I've got a 1.3 MK 1 Driver Engine / 'Box / Driveshafts for sale.

You could stick some bike carbs on for a bit of extra oomph.
