engine change advice

hi ive bin thinking about changing the engine in my golf for a long time and talking about it with mates at work [gti owners] :(
im being told its more trouble than its worth my golfs a 1981 1.1c
ive bin toying with the idea of a mk1 gti 1.8 16v
is it gonna be as bigger challenge of funds time and patience as they say? :? and is there a endless list of changes to be done :?

any help to a noob would be much appreciated 8O
thank you amazing people with great taste in motors

It can be done, but in my opinion, there's too much to change over on the 1.1 to make it cost effective. In addition to the engine iteself, you need to relocate the engine mount, and fit GTI fuelling system, brakes, suspension too. A lot of work.

and gearbox, steering rack, half of cooling system, exhaust, fuel tank, anti-roll bars, infact its probably quicker to list the bits are the same between a big block injected car and a small block carb model. The list of differences just goes on and on…. and then when you come to insure it or sell it its a modified car so will cost more and be worth less than a genuine GTI or 1100 Golf C

Only really worth it if you have a mechanically sound but totally rotten GTI and a 11/1300 with a 100% solid shell.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

If you go to the search thingy mate the same question has been asked a hundred times.

I asked it a while back also.

Sorry cant give you any constructive advice but theres plenty of info on this site already regarding the 'bigger engine in a 1.1' idea.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

This can be done and a lot of work but basically bolt on stuff. i would say it depends on how good your shell is. a good gti costs a fortune but good drivers can be picked up for peanuts. i had a mint driver and a not so good gti. i swapped absolutely everything over ,sold the [ex gti] driver on and had a very good gti spec car which then because it wasnt genuine and worth a lot i could modify without losing value.

too much work to put the mk3 in if hes going to put that in he may as well put the 1.8 16v in,
get a polo gt engine 1300 and lob that in and run it on a mk1 manifokd and webber replacement carb,
or put a 1300 in from a mk2 golf if u can find one,

i always have the last laugh ;)
