door handle/latch

Hi all, drivers door latch on my mk1 is f**ked so I picked up a pair of shiney chrome ones from an audi coupe.. fitted and works ok when operated from the inner door pull but the audi latch differs slightly in that the levers operated by the door handle are slightly different. In other words I can open the door from the inside but can't open or lock it from the outside..

I have heard that you need door handles from a mk2 golf to make this mod work but then i had thought that all mk1 and mk2 handles were the same… Can anyone shed any light??

Thanks.

look at the handles carefully next to your old ones, you may be able to swap the fingers over after driving out a pin. this is jhow you convert mk2 rear handles to mk1/2 front.  the MK1 lock might swap straight into the audi handle I think, if so that would solve the lock issue at least

Thanks for the reply, the audi latch i have is from a newer coupe i.e. an '80' coupe - which has a totally different exterior handle.

However just discovered that the ur quattro uses same exterior handles as mk1/2 golf - at least they look the same from the outside.. Have been told that the mechanism on the handle is different and I'm hoping that it's different such that it will be able to fully operate the newer latch. Will report back any findings when i get my hands on a ur quattro handle

handle

URQ does have the same handles, but the bits that attach to it on the inside of the door are different,i know this because my mate has a URQ and i fitted PORSCHE handles to it.I fitted chrome audi door catched to my golf, but had to cut the tabs off the audi ones which are different to the golf ones, then cut off the ones from the golf ones and welded them on,u have to make sure they look exactly the same otherwise they wont work properly, was a bit tricky to get them right but got there fairly easily.
