Conversion?

Hi there people! I am a new member and have just purcased myself a 1990 mark 1 Golf GTi Cab that needs some work doing to it. I've always been a speed demon and can never leave anything as standard; I would like to convert the original engine to a 2.8 VR6 lump out of the Golf mark 3, or possibly an AUG 1.8t but loving the sound of the VR6 and costwise will lke to go ahead with that, is there anyone that would outline any major issues with installing this engine or have a fitting guide, i.e- what mounts to use, gearbox, drive shafts etc? There's a lot for the 20v turbo but none of this I can seem to find. If anyone can offer their help on these matters I would be grateful. Will post some pictures of the little beaut soon as my camera is fixed! Thanks.

I've seen the VR in mk1's a couple of times and generally it was done by fixing a complete subframe to the mk1 chassis whereas the 1.8t will go straight in with mounts you can easily make or buy

Biggest issue with the VR6 is the fact that when it is in mk1 the sump is very low to the ground.

After looking into mk1 engines, I think my money would be a 1.8t out of the two, but a 16v conversion is a classic and proven conversion!

Projekt Frustration :

White 1991 Clipper. Lowered over polished zender rims, Single 40 dellorto on lynx manifold, kent cam, full stainless 'zorst / manifold, powerflex bushed and braced. Not the fastest car, but sounds super nice!

Still going after 12 years… never said it was a quick fix! Time is not my friend.

Hi i am on the final stages of a vr6 conversion, we did not go down the sub frame way. we welded new mounts in. i will be putting up a detailed account and pics of the conversion up soon.
As for the work to do it, was well worth it just for sound of it never mind the power!!!!
so if you want to go down the vr route, all i can say is that you won't be disapointed.
good luck in which ever route you take.

I beg to differ

ferrari 360cs
ascari a12
arial atom
DB9s
enzo
911 GT3rs
5.7litre Plymouth
rs2000
GT continental s
Bugatti veyron

I found a soul choir

On a serious note i was considering this myself but however you look at it, it involves a lot of fabrication, effort and cash. There are just easier ways to get a powerplant.

The effort and fabrication has been a fair amount of work, :banghead:  hope to put a detailed account of the conversion up soon.

The cab got passed on to a new owner that ruined it with a red interior and 17"momo's. Poor car.
