conversion from 1.1

Just brought a 1.1 1983 mk1 is it an easy job to drop an 1.6 or 1.8 8v in ?

You'd be cheaper buying a GTi  8O

They say "don't build a car you can buy" for a reason.

Basically, there's too many things different, to make it worthwhile - fuel system, fuel tank, pump, accumulator, lines, engine mount location on body, wheels, tyres, suspension, anti roll bars, brakes. And that's before the engine has been taken into account! And it will always be a "fake" or "bodged" (perceived as) engine conversion, rather than a Golf GTI which doesn't cost that much more.

I don't think there percieved as bodged or fake, ultimatley when it's
done everything will be changed that needs to be and it'l be pretty much the same outcome as doing it with a gti, just more new parts! I would'nt be put off by it mate im doing ok with mine, just have to buy and fit a few more parts but they're easily found with the help of alot of the people on here.

That said alot of people are choosing the small block cars now as they tend to be less abused non sunroof models.not a big job really if you can get hold of a GTI scrapper for a few quid

I see what you mean - if a car's had a neat and tidy engine conversion with many new parts replaced at the time, then it will make a good car and should stand okay for strong resale value.
