complete 16v car loom in a mk1 carb?I NEED YOUR HELP

Hi guys.  I have embarked on my 16v conversion.  Removed the complete loom from my carb model, (completely labelled in the process). i.e. the whole car from back to front.

My fuse box has the colour coded connectors on the back.  I can get hold of a complete early 16v car loom, included all wiring, ecu, fusebox, idle etc.  Will this loom be compatible with my existing switches, speedo, rear lights, etc.  Can I plug in parts of my mk1 loom into the mk2 fusebox for say the rear lights, etc.

I have also acquired a lift pump, accumulator and fuel pump from a gti.  The lift pump had three connectors, my old one had 2 as the lift pump was not electric.  WIll the 16v loom have three also.  Because i have limited experience with wiring, i thought this would be the best way to convert especially as mine was a carb model.  Any help appreciated as engine has already been removed waiting for my new engine.

Mk2 item is the same thing as late mk1 item depending on the year [ later MK2 was totally different ]  but there are two many differences in the looms . Imagine altering all the dash wiring . If its was me i would keep original loom and add only what parts you need for the conversion especially if your not wiring minded !  Pumps would be easy , just use parts of the 16V loom .

say for the clocks, i would definately need to change the loom over.  Question is it just the connectors that are different, for say a switch or is it completely wired up differently in the fuse box.. Problem is i havnt got my hands on a mk2 loom to see what i need or what the differences are.

Forget about using a Mk2 loom, you simply don't need to go through the hassle of trying to adapt it to your car, etc. All you need is the ignition part, which is one small section of the loom. If you're starting from a cabby you need 2-3 other connectors for AAV, WUR and TTS thats it though. Most of the wiring in my car is Mk1, with the little bit of the Mk2 ignition stuff.

spoke to someone at old school performance and he said since mine was a carb, and wanted to run the original 16v stuff for the engine, that it would be easier to do, just change the plugs on the end.  doesnt sound too difficult to me as my original looms completely off the vehicle and everything is labelled.  Will see when i get the mk2 complete wiring.

Now you've spoken to 2 other people who think it would be harder to do! Its your decision, I'm sure its possible to use the mk2 loom but I wouldn't fancy trying to sort it all out!!!!!

yeah true comment.  Actually not all that difficult, just as long as u remember to label properly.  Took me about a day to remove the dash, complete loom, engine, etc..  Probably take a month to get it all back in!   Sourced another mk1 gti loom and am going that route now.

working on the wiring

got hold of a gti loom, but there are big differences in the loom in terms of lighting etc and the condition wasnt too good.  So i kept my loom and removed parts relating to the mfa and stuff and swaped into the gti fusebox.  my hands are proper fuct after all that.  Hopefully the new wiring for the fuel pump will be ok as it was 2 wire, now three  8O
found a few wires that were missing from the loom and wired in.  Fingers crossed, that it works..
