coilovers

hi all, got a f plate 1.8 clipper cabby, it came with 17's and standard suspension, it doesnt realy look to high, i just want it a bit stiffer, because as u can imagine it rolls and rubs like fook.

so has anybody got any idea of which coilovers are best for a relitively small budget??
an cud it go lower on 17's with small arch mods??

any help wud be greatly recived

Coilovers, apart from being completely pointless on a road car, could cause you more clearance issues than you already have, due to the spring pans being lower, giving tighter clearance on the inside.

IMHO 17's are way too big for a mk1 chassis anyway, I suppose it depends if you want to sacrifice handling for looks.

What width tyres are you running, I'm guessing that anything over 205's with correct off set and coventional struts are going to necessitate arch work if its lowered.

Hope this helps.

its got 225's i think, wiv it bein a cabby, it doesnt do much raceing about any way, i just wanted it to be stiffer, as it doesnt sit to bad,

dint want to guess at how much i cud lower it by just buying a set of shocks and springs,,

so i thought coilovers wud be beta, so i could make it stiffer, without nesesceraly making it any lower,

or am i compleatly off the mark?? :dontknow:

Just get yourself some koni adjustable inserts/shocks.
Will be plenty stiff enough for you.

I had a G-Max kit on an old scirocco, stiff enough, cheap (around ?200) and lowered only 25mm, which when you factored in the fact the old springs were past their best only actually lowered the car by around 10mm.

Well ive got coilovers on my mk1 and i think tere fine for everyday use, but mines decked, im not going for handling etc as i know ive passed the point of good handling but mainly looks.

The ones i went for were the fk highsports from venom, 420 quid.

What you mean about more clearance issues with coilovers, surely the smaller dia of the shocks the more inside clearance your gonna get! As they are much smaller than standard shocks and springs?

Btw 225's are a bit on the large side what widh are the rims>? :dontknow:

With Coilovers, the spring is longer on the strut and sits behind the actual wheel and tyre, though with the standard struts, the spring seat is higher that the top of the tyre, therefor you only have the diameter of the shock to wory about.

When I put my coilies on with Teardrop alloys, the front tyres fould the spring seats. With the alley cats I have on it now (they have a smaller offset) I have still only got about 3 to 5mm clearence!

yeh i know what you mean now mate, will that also depend on the size of the rims then too? As he's using 17's

I'm not exactly sure how that can be practical for everyday use. Don't you have speed humps or pot holes?
