Changing dash bulbs to LED`s

A couple of my dash bulbs have gone so i want to change them out.
First option is to upgrade them to 2w items.
Can i get replacement LED bulbs instead?
If so what do i have to watch for, any reccomendations on what to get?
Thanks.
Skid.

You can change them to LEDs very easily.  Depends whether you want OEM look or slightly modified.  Details on LED can be found here mate…

Just changed all mine to LED's yesterday. Bought a bag of 10 with holders for a tenner of ebay. Although to be honest I kept the original holders as they were better quality. Even pulled various switches apart and changed the bulbs inside. Be careful when doing this.  Also bought a 9 LED 42mm festoon bulb for the interior light…..much much better!

Easy mod, looks a bit brighter. The rheostat on the headlight switch doesnt do much now but hey…who dims their lights??

I am wanting to keep original look, just brighter.
I looked through that list of bulbs on the "superbrightleds" link but they look nothing like what is required. :dontknow:

Has anybody got a complete list of what type and for where in the car that is required?

You can just swop the bulbs over from 1.5w to 2w. etc.
They are colour coded for wattage on the base. Green, black, grey?, cannot remember the colours now off the top of my head
makes a slight difference!!!

LEDs produce a brighter white light very artificial.
Not really original look and as these can swamp the area. It will be a balance to get the origional look right. Hence using bulbs so they give a softer origional light.

Quite a few MK1 dahsbords have set on fire including mine because bigger bulbs were used and put too much current throught the circuit so I wouldnt recomment it.  It melts the wires between the dimmer on the headlight switch and the cigarette lighter.  Ive spent aroun £60 so far replacing the dash loom, headlight switch, cigarette lighter, ISO connectors etc

Sorry to ressurect this old thread but I have had this happen to me. thankfully no damage other than melted wires but now have no dash lights :(

I think I'll replace with red LEDs to match the interior.

robanniversary which ISO connectors did you need? and did you have to remove the dash?

Strange you having problems with the 2w bulbs, mine have been fine for 8 years, I did not even realize I had changed them for 2w bulbs (I replaced them last time) until I had to replace them again a couple of weeks ago as 1 had blown.

I'm unsure what is in there right now. I bought some clocks to get a tacho, so its whatever was in those. the clocks were from a polo, so perhaps they had a more robust wiring loom in dash.

amazes me that the circuit isnt fused though! I'll be adding a 1a inline fuse when i replace the wire thats for sure.
