Carbs

Im in the middle of doing a 16v conversion into a mk1 1300 driver. I need some help with regards the ignition system. Im going to use twin 40's but what do i need to do with the ingnition as the 16v engine im using out of a 90spec mk2 has electronic ignition? Do i still need the ecu or do i need to change to a diifrent dizzy, if so what dizzy is it i need? Has anyone got one? Also what sensors and wirring do i need to keep so it still runs on carbs after ive romove the injection system? Any help is always much appreciated  :y:

I thought a carb based engine uses a totally different head?

I'm sure you would need a diff head for this.

No head is definately the same with the addtion of a manifold from euro carbs limited they bolt straight to the head. Its just the ignition/wiring side of things im not sure on.....

You can use the ignition system I believe, though not sure what is involved…

No other (points based) dizzy fits straight on. Apparently an old Polo 1300 dizzy can be machined to fit the valver head, which will get you where you want to be, but that sounds like more hassle than it is worth.

Check on the CGTI forums - loads of people running valvers on carbs, so it can't be a big headache.

I need to address this myself at some point, though not at this stage yet.
Was also planning on using MegaJolt mappable ignition, which along with the necessary Ford EDIS ignition stuff can be done for about ?200…

If i use the valver electronic ignition system i guess i also need the ecu and wiring along with it? Im only 21, still in an apprentiship but have access to machining equpiment? Any ideas on what year 1300 polo dizzy? Guessing you are fairly up on golfs but i had a zip file sent to me about this conversion if you need any info? Ill prob add to it slightly as it covers using a mk1 gti (which im not) as a basis and also dosen't cover carbs.   Oh also anyone know what year audi 80 front caliper carriers i need to bolt on the mk2 156mm front disc's and mk2 calipers on to the mk1 hub?

Not sure what year sorry, but it is the same style as the 1300cc Mk1 golf engine, where the dizzy bolts to the side of the head like the valver. The Mk1 golf 1300 dizzy may actually work too…

Sorry I'm a bit vague - This is the one area I haven't really researched well myself as I was planning on going the MegaJolt route. If you can afford the ?200, it is well worth a look at.
Buy the kit from Brent in the US (The link above) get Ford EDIS ignition set up from a scrappy for about ?20 to ?30. buy a toothed wheel and weld it to the crank pully and mount the crank sensor accordingly.

As long as you have access to a laptop or a PC, then you can tweak your ignition map to produce the best results. Ideal if you are doing something like adding carbs to an engine not originally designed to take them…
I remember hearing something about using the 16v electronic ignition with carbs and losing the automatic advance on acceleration, hence the polo points dizzy option. The valver dizzy has no centrifugal advance built in to it…
