Can It Be Done??

Hi Everyone.
I'm getting a bit bored of my slow mk1 and getting fed up of people taking the mick and overtaking me all the time.
My fiancee has a Sierra Sapphire Cosworth and i cant let him be the only one with a fast car so i'm thinking of an engine conversion.

Can a VR6 be fitted into a mk1? if so what is involved and the rough costs??

Or

What engine conversion would you recommend??

Thanks for the help guys!

If its too difficult to get a VR6 in then another vw engine recommendation would be good :)

Easiest option would be a 2.0 16v which with a few simple mods (kr cams) would give approx 160+bhp. Pretty straight forward swap. More mods could take it to near 200bhp. 1.8t 20v swap a lot more work (different mounts and injection system etc) but can give 225+bhp with a chip change. vr6 will fit but is quite heavy and may upset the handling a bit (even more understeer as more nose heavy) with 180ish bhp but loads of torque…

All engines have different characteristics but for outright speed the 20vt would be the way to go I would have thought.

You pays your money you takes your choice!

I have just done the 20v conversion cost wise it is approx 3.5k for engine, exhaust downpipe, intercooler plug and play ecu. I am putting a variable boost in as I can get 330bhp from the engine as it has a different turbo but if you go for a BAM engine 225bhp you can get 260-270bhp so should whop the cossie as you only have 800kg or there abouts but you will need to uprate just about everything including brakes, suspension etc etc. I have a friend who has done the vr6 conversion and its so heavy on the front but if you decide to go that way perhaps the R32 may be a better option. The VR6 is far more costly to tune, much heavier and with no pas it is hard work parking. If you want any advice send me a mail and I will forwrd you some links which will be helpful.

Future tense, though! Will it really cost ?1500? Or will it escalate? I've just done an engine conversion myself, and little things add up and up. Mind you, I feel I've been unlucky with breaking a number of minor items, and also took on other engine bay related work. Those prices seem high but realistic. Of course you can save by DIY but its not like swapping a set of headlamps!

I'm just passing on my experiences after having done an engine conversion. I wouldn't want you to run out of money, with an unfinished car, and be forced to delay finishing it or sell it as an unfinished project (these tend to be worth not too much).

To be honest it is true with any work you undertake if you do it properly. I bought my car and originally intended to just replace some discs, pads, drums, shoes etc to get it through the MOT and it turned into a pretty much full mechanical restoration.

While you have one bit off you can get to another bit so might as well fix that etc…

It all adds up - I daren't look at my receipts folder though. Might scare myself! 8O
