budget mods.

o.k. now i have a benchmark figure for the 1/4 mile, i'm going to set a challenge for myself. 16.40 is the quickest she did, with 16.5ish being a good run. i'm going to see if we can get into the 15's with standard head, cam, block and so on.
i said budget, so what i'm going to do is, audi throttle, 16v wur, maybe a tad of diy flowing on the manifolds and some induction experiments. all cheap and cheerfull.
half a second off the 1/4 is a lot to ask considering the mods i'm going to do, but i reckon the old dx engine can just squeeze it.
are you with me, or against me?
if you have any helpful comments to add, please do. if you have any unhelpful comments to add, might as well get it off your chest.

i have a dx flowed head and shrick 270 cam. also have a 2.0 audi block sourced. not dropping that lot in, until i get chassis and brakes to how i want them. this is more of an experiment so we can see the benefits of cheap easy mods, measued against the clock.

also have a tsr 280mm brake conversion kit. reciept of over ?500. any good to you.

mods

not sure but ive heard theres a easy way to increase the fuel pressure on a mk1 which gives it a bit of a boost also the throttle body wur and metering head from an audi is a good trick

theres no reason why you shouldnt get into the 15 second mark remove the centre silecer get a 4 branch so it breaths more then try to mod the airbox to get extra coldair into it although there wasnt much cold air yesterday

defo not forced induction day way to hot i use dry ice on my intercooler so you may be able to use some for your air box to keep the heat down

went out today for a play with the g-tech pro now it works and my 1/4 mile times were 13.8  13.9   14.3  wasnt all that impressed to be honest need more boost

just going to do the basic cheap mods mentioned so we can all see the effects of them. i've got more power waiting in the wings but not just yet. got a couple of induction tricks up my sleeve too. experimental, but i think they might work..?

what's the point of having a bloody great turbo nutter if you can't drive it because it's hot?

Your easiest method of reducing your times is to loose weight. Strip it down as much as possible, inflate your tires nice and hard, change to some higher profile tyres with a smaller rolling radius to increase acceleration - you could try going on a diet too!

HIGHER PROFILE TYRES TO REDUCE ROLLING RADIUS????????????

yes, i know. you're missing the point. it's to see the effectiveness of cheap and easy mods. some people have limited spanner skills, some have limited funds, probably alot have both. if i take the seats out and lose the carpet, sound proofing and spare wheel, then i'll get quicker times. as it is, i can use the figures for a standard motor as a benchmark. may do a few runs at the next festival with these mods and then take half the interior out and put in one of the floppy tops. just to see how much quicker it is.
it's all inexact science but fun at least.

Sorry, I meant reduce the rolling radius and get tyres with a higher profile. Other than what's already been said I don't think there is a lot else you can try.

reduce the rolling radius and get tyres with higher profiles????????????????

you're doing it again!

it's not me, is it?

i'll do that woza, if some one lets me dump the gear in thier car for an hourish

What i'm trying to say is that all the dragsters you see have big fat high profile tyres so that is good.

New sentance.

If you reduce the rolling radius of the wheel you will accelerate slighty faster.

Does that make sense? :dontknow: I have had a few jars so it might be me!

how? i'm running 185/60/14's. please educate me as to how i do both.

tyres

185/45/14 be like running 13inch wheels i run 195/45/15 and they are the same radius and 185/60/14

lower profile gives smaller radius i think

get 2x 15inch space savers on the back and 13inch on the front then it will either spin on the spot or accelerate a bit quicker

Post

185/45 will be lower profile. drunken woza wants me to use higher profile tyres AND reduce rolling radius!

lol

woza feeling bendy there was a mk2 at the pod running super thin rims on the rear up the strip they looked like space savers but they were actualy alloys that matched the front looked well weird

theres loads of little tricks you can do on the day like over inflating tyres removing unwanted seats ect i reckon you should get into the 15s no probs

what about fuel additive methanol ect ect

the audi boys used to use it in there tanks whilst on the strip  :dontknow: worth a try maybe do some searching

no. going to do the mods and keep all else the same. get a good comparison then. then i can drop weight or run different wheels. over inflating tyres is not that ideal. rear wheels are best as thin as possible. front wheels need traction. thinner than 185's would cause launch problems and probably return slower times.

Run smaller wheels with fatter tyres that still add up to less than the 60/14's you got already…
