Easy would be swap to a 1300 - same engine mounts, etc. Anything bigger and you'd have to relocate the engine mount - best idea is to look at/measure a bigger engine car. Then, you could fit an 1800cc carb engine, eg from a later convertible. If you wanted to fit a fuel injection engine, you'd have to also swap the fuel tank and lines, since these would require a fuel return as well as delivery pipe.

Why don't you simply purchase a Golf GTI? There's plenty around.

The problem you always have with tuning/modifying a car, is that you end up throwing away perfectly servicable parts, because you're replacing them. It makes far more sense to buy a more powerful car in the first place, if you have an 1100 and want more performance.

true, but with mk1s now the Chassis/body condition becomes important...

The in thing at the moment is to fit 1300 engines with a gas flowed head and bike carbs. It may sound stupid but people have been getting bhp figures of over 100 bhp. may not sound much but in a small car with a small light engine it can be very impressive. the other upgrade is to fit a g40 engine but you will have problems sourcing one.

I hope this has fed your imagination.
